The Springfield Arts Commission is pleased to present Particles of Memory, an exhibition of new paintings by Rebecca Mannheimer. The show will run from October 1-31, 2019 with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m., Friday, October 11. The reception, which is open and free to the community, will treat visitors to light refreshments and live music by Jason Renslow.

Mannheimer’s current exhibition is rooted in her history and experience growing up with a mother who was a bridge player. While the card game was always a mystery to Mannheimer, she was drawn to the shapes on the cards, and found the club to be a useful object to explore in a series of work. Mannheimer is “drawn to the duality of the word and the shape” and how it reflects a piece of her past.

With Particles of Memory, Mannheimer also explores a bird shape, a silo, a house, a tower, or a winged bee with a warm and layered application of color. Each shape has a connection to a piece of her history and while some shapes are represented literally, most are not. With acrylic on canvas, Mannheimer uses fragments of language and experience and abstracts them, continually reworking them to find new meaning.

The gallery reception is an opportunity to meet the artist and enjoy live music by Jason Renslow. An experienced musician who has been performing in coffee shops and breweries around town for many years, Renslow writes most of the music he performs and has played with bands such as The Junkyard All-Stars and Piece Corpse. His music can be found online Bandcamp and Google Play.
