On July 1st, 2020, at 7:35 a.m. the Springfield Police Department received a report of a bicyclist who had been struck by a vehicle driving eastbound on Centennial Blvd. at 6th Street. The first responding officer located an injured elderly male who was unconscious and not breathing. The officer rendered aid and the bicyclist was subsequently transported by medics to Sacred Heart – Riverbend Hospital.

The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was activated. Preliminary results of their investigation indicate the bicyclist was traveling northbound on 6th Street and failed to obey the stop sign at Centennial Blvd. The bicyclist entered the vehicular lane of travel on Centennial Blvd. and was struck. There is no evidence indicating the bicyclist was traveling within the bicycle lane present on Centennial Blvd. at this intersection.

The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped and is cooperating with the investigation. Neither speed nor alcohol is a factor in the collision. The injured male is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and suffered multiple rib fractures and head trauma. He is expected to recover.
