The Springfield Public Library has been offering free bus passes to the families of Springfield Public School students to help remove barriers to access and help them get to the library as part of a grant funded pilot program called “Get On Board.”

Thanks to the MillsDavis Foundation, the program provides for three “family field trips” events. It rolled out November 19 with 61 students and family members participating from Guy Lee Elementary, Centennial Elementary, and Hamlin Middle School.  On November 26, Elizabeth Page, Maple, and Two Rivers-Dos Rios elementary school students and their families participated.

“When the bus arrives, all the kids and parents pour out and they are so excited to be at the library,” said Library Associate Manager LuCinda Gustavson. “It is quite an adventure to ride the bus with your family, especially for the little ones. Of course, free pizza and free books are pretty exciting too. The parents really appreciate learning about how our services work and everyone has fun exploring the library. After the library tour, every child gets to pick out a new book to keep. The ride back to school is much quieter as everyone is reading!”

Today, December 3 is the final “family field trip” with River Bend, Mt. Vernon, and Douglas Gardens students and families participating. Families participating in the program take a school bus from their local school and come to the library for a tour, free pizza, free books for kids, and a free booklet of 10 bus passes.

“Get on Board is a wonderful program that provides the opportunity for parents to be able to read to their children, which is extremely valuable to a child’s positive growth,” said Elementary Director Suzanne Price. “We appreciate our amazing partners at the Springfield Library for working with our families to provide transportation and encourage reading.”
