Dia de Los Muertos Artist Workshops Featuring Maricela Figueroa Zamilpa and Mija Andrade

A COVID-safe community-wide month of celebration and remembrance

Get inspired and learn more about the art traditions of Día de los Muertos! Springfield is observing el Día de los Muertos during the month of October through early November. As part of Lane Arts Council’s Fiesta Cultural, Springfield Public Library will present two virtual artist workshops:

  • Bilingual Virtual Talk with Fernando Soto: “Day of the Dead: Hanging Altars of Coatetelco”
Noon, Sunday, November 1 via Zoom
Hosted on Zoom; to register visit www.nochecultural.com
Co-hosted with Eugene Arte Latino and Noche Cultural.

During the talk, Fernando Soto Vidal will discuss his photographic work that focuses on hanging offerings, a pre-Hispanic tradition that is still preserved by families of the indigenous community of Coatetelco, as part of their celebrations of the Day of Dead.

Local Mexican American artist, Mija Andrade, shares the rich, deeply rooted and vibrant art and cultural traditions of this annual time of remembrance and celebration. She will offer helpful tips and tricks on how you can get creative and use materials from our free Make-Your-Own-Altar kits.

Get started creating your altar/ofrenda today! Families and individuals can learn about the art traditions of Día de Los Muertos and get creative with our FREE Make-Your-Own-Altar kits, available now through Wednesday, November 4 at the Library and participating businesses.

Kits include fun, vibrant, easy-to-use materials to make an altar for your home or business, and/or submit materials for the Springfield Community Altar hosted by the Springfield History Museum. Photograph your creations and enter the altar competition for a chance to win awesome local prizes!

Dia de Los Muertos Self-guided Altar Tour and Community Procession

A COVID-safe community-wide month of celebration and remembrance

In observation of el Día de los Muertos and as part of Lane Arts Council’s Fiesta Cultural, Springfield Public Library will host a Community Altar at the Springfield History Museum in downtown Springfield.

Small local businesses around downtown and throughout Springfield are also joining this time of celebration and remembrance with storefront altar displays. We encourage you to take a break, get out into our community, and take a self-guided tour! A full list of participating businesses can be found on our website at wheremindsgrow.org.

Follow the marigolds! Our Springfield Community Altar and participating businesses will have a bright marigold on the sidewalk outside of their business.

Mark your calendar for an afternoon of remembrance and celebration at 4 p.m., Monday, November 2. Join fellow community members for our Día de los Muertos Community Procession in the heart of downtown from Springfield City Hall to the Springfield History Museum.

The event will feature music by el Taller de Son Jarocho and a dedication at the Springfield Community Altar. Free themed hand-made cloth masks will be handed out by Eugene and Springfield’s very own old SLUG Queen, Sadie Slimey Stitches (aka artist Maiya Becker). Free cloth masks and procession candles available while supplies last. Physical distance will be observed and masks are required.
