Springfield Celebrates Authors 2020: Bill Sullivan’s ‘The Ship in the Sand’

Springfield Celebrates Authors is back for 2020 and kicks off with one of the area’s favorite local authors – Bill Sullivan – to answer the question: “Were the Vikings barbarians?” Well known for his “100 Hikes” Oregon Guidebooks, Sullivan will present on his latest Viking novel “The Ship in the Sand” at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 20. While researching the book, Sullivan undertook more than a dozen trips to Northern Europe examining Viking burial ships, rune stones, and treasure troves and will present an illustrated tour of the history and archeology of the Vikings. “The Ship in the Sand” covers an era of the Viking Age when Harald Bluetooth united Denmark, setting the stage for the conquest of England. Alternating chapters are set in World War II, when Danish archeologists set out to undermine the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Sullivan is the author of 22 books about history, mystery, and adventure. His journal of a 1000-mile hike across Oregon, “Listening for Coyote,” was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission as one of Oregon’s 100 most significant books.

Springfield Celebrates Authors is an annual series presented by the Springfield Public Library highlighting local, national and international authors. Over the course of four months, patrons can hear from published trail guides, historians, Oregon Book Award winners and poets. The next Springfield Celebrates Authors event will feature Oregon Book Award 2019 Winner, Kenneth R. Coleman, discussing his book ‘Dangerous Subjects’ at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 8.

All events are free and open to the community.
