The Springfield City Council has adopted an automatic extension of business licenses and is postponing renewal payments until September 30, 2020 for businesses in Springfield that are required to have a business license from the City to operate within the city limits. No late fees will be imposed as well. The adoption occurred as part of the Council’s regular meeting on May 4, 2020 under Resolution 2020-13.

This is being done to provide local businesses affected by the State’s COVID-19 Response closure orders some temporary relief by postponing their payment for renewal of their business operating license. The closure orders have hit certain types of local businesses particularly hard.

Annually, letters for renewal of business licenses are mailed out in May and payment is due by June 30. However, this year as part of the City’s COVID-19 responses, letters for renewal of business licenses will be mailed in August and payment will be due September 30, 2020. Once payment is received, the new license will be issued with a new expiration date of June 30, 2021.

The City will mail a letter notifying affected businesses that their licenses scheduled to expire on June 30, 2020 have been automatically extended. Letters will be mailed today, May 20, 2020. The extension is effective as of May 4, 2020 and will expire on September 30, 2020 or when the City issues a new license upon receipt of renewal payment, whichever comes first. Affected businesses can to renewal their business license any time before September 30, 2020. All affected businesses must continue to abide by all emergency orders and regulations related to COVID-19.

Affected businesses may submit a renewal application at any time before August, if they choose.  The annual renewal fee is due at the time of application.  The City will not refund renewal payments that have already been submitted.
