DATE/TIME:  January 30, 2020 @ 0945

On January 22, 2020 at 0249 hours, Eugene/Springfield Fire responded to the Emergency Veterinary Hospital located at 103 W Q St in Springfield for an active fire. Eugene/Springfield Fire were able to quickly extinguish the flames, which burned through an electrical box on the back side of the building causing damage to the structure. The fire also caused the interior of the Hospital to fill with smoke. The Hospital was occupied by 10 employees and several animals at the time.

Police and Fire at the scene determined the fire was set intentionally by the use of some type of accelerant.   Subsequent investigation revealed that Mathew Wayne Rossi had been in the Hospital prior the fire and had become disruptive over a billing disagreement involving his cat. He was asked to leave the premises and our agency was called. When we arrived, Mr. Rossi had left the area.

Investigators utilized surveillance footage from the Hospital and surrounding businesses to identify Mr. Rossi returning to and fleeing from the Hospital at the time the fire started.

Springfield Police Investigators located Mr. Rossi in Junction City today and he was arrested on the listed charges without incident.

The investigation is continuing and more charges may be pending.
