On June 22nd, 2020, at approximately 4:13 p.m. the Springfield Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen regarding a male with a handgun in the area of 10th St. and Main St. Patrol Officers soon located the involved subject (name withheld) who immediately ran from police and entered the passenger side of a vehicle parked in an alley.
Once inside the vehicle, the subject raised a handgun to his head and threatened suicide, which prompted a heavy police response to evacuate the area and contain the subject. Members of the SWAT Team, Command Staff, and Crisis Negotiators also responded to the location in hopes of resolving the matter safely and peacefully. All of this was occurring while SPD personnel were preparing for, and handling, a large gathering of pro-police demonstrators and a group of counter protesters in the downtown area.
Multiple negotiators were utilized to communicate with the subject, deescalate the situation, and negotiate the subject’s surrender. The standoff lasted over four hours with the subject alternating hands to hold the weapon up to his head, his neck, and his chest. The subject ultimately agreed to place the handgun on the vehicle’s dashboard. At 8:43 p.m. the subject calmly stepped from the vehicle to surrender. He was taken into custody without any use of force and was immediately provided access to crisis counselors.
