Incident:                            Vehicle Pursuit

Location:                            Bob Straub Parkway & Mt. Vernon Road

Case Number:                   19-3422

Date/Time:                        May 2nd, 2019 @ 0125 hrs

Arrested:                            Robert Dwayne Owens (35 Years of Age)

On May 2nd, 2019, at 1:25am Springfield Police Officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle near Bob Straub Parkway and Mt. Vernon Road.  The driver, Robert Dwayne Owens, fled at speeds over 100 mph in an attempt to elude police. The pursuit entered the Jasper area before taking Parkway Road toward Highway 58.  Owens turned westbound at Highway 58 and continued driving at high speeds.

A Springfield Police unit paralleling the pursuit was able to position himself in front of the pursuit and successfully spike strips, which disabled three of the four tires.  Owens took Interstate 5 (North) as his tires began to shred.  The spike strip deployment significantly reduced Owens’ speed and ability to handle the vehicle.  Owens ultimately spun out at the bottom of the Goshen exit off-ramp and attempted to flee on foot.  He was promptly taken into custody.  A passenger in the vehicle was initially detained, but was later released without charges.

Owens was treated at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital for minor injuries and was later lodged at the Lane County Jail for Attempted Elude by Vehicle, Elude by Foot, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangering.

The Springfield Police Department (SPD) would like to thank the Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), the Oregon State Police (OSP), and Fire Department personnel who assisted at the scene once the pursuit ended.
