The City of Springfield is starting construction today, August 3, 2020, on one of three school connectivity and safety projects. The first project is the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing on G Street in front of Two Rivers – Dos Rios Elementary School between 10th and 12th streets. G Street will be closed to through traffic during the construction.

The closure will allow the contractor to ground down the pavement that is a necessary step to install the raised portion of the crossing. When completed, the raised pedestrian crossing will help slow traffic down in front of the school.

Later this month, the additional two school connectivity and safety projects will be constructed – a rapid flashing beacon pedestrian crossing on 21st Street by Maple Elementary School and pedestrian ramps at the intersection of 5th and M streets across from Hamlin Middle School.

These three locations were identified after a safety assessment was performed. The City received a Federal Community Development Block Grant for the crossing improvements to help ensure that pedestrians have a place to cross safely and have access within the public right of way that meets current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
