NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:

Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team to Review Officer Involved Shooting on Broadway in Springfield.

On May 30th, 2021 at 907 p.m. officers with the Springfield Police Department where dispatched to 474 Broadway in Springfield regarding a disturbance in the neighborhood.   Officers located the suspect and attempted to take him into custody.  The male was uncooperative and a physical fight ensued between the suspect and officers, and subsequently an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect male was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Involved officers were treated for minor injuries.

The Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team (IDFIT) responded and resumed primary investigative role for the use of force immediately following the incident.  The Lane County Deadly Force Plan provides “a framework for a consistent response to an officer’s use of deadly physical force that treats the officer fairly, and promotes public confidence in the criminal justice system.”

In Oregon, deadly use of force incidents are conducted by investigators who are independent of the involved agency as outlined under Senate Bill 111.

Until the conclusion of the IDFIT investigation and review of findings by the Lane County District Attorney, we will be honoring the process by referring media questions to the DA’s Office.

If anyone has any additional information they are asked to call the Springfield Police Department at 541-726-3714.
