Last night the Springfield City Council directed staff to move forward on a proposal to auto-renew library materials in an effort to improve access to the Springfield Public Library.

This change will not affect the number of renewals per item (three). The new procedure will renew the item automatically on the due date if there are any renewals left on the item unless it has been placed on hold by another library goer.

Library staff have been evaluating services and found that large percentages of both active and expired accounts are blocked due to fines or fees.

“Our goal is to continue improving access to library services,” said Library Director Emily David. “By changing our procedures, we’d like to see if we can help reduce the accumulation of fines and keep the library accessible to all Springfield residents.”

This change will give library patrons more time to return items or keep the items longer without accumulating fines.

The new auto-renewal procedure will go into effect in September 2019.
