Recruitment & Selection

The Recruitment Process

The City encourages all applicants to make use of our online application because using computers and accessing the Internet is an integral part of today’s work environment. At the same time you complete your online application, you may upload your resume and/or cover letter (in MS Word or PDF format). Visit our Tips for Applying page to learn more about applying for employment with the City of Springfield.

All applications include a mandatory ‘Qualifying Questionnaire’ and some also require additional supplemental questions. Be sure to carefully read the job posting paying close attention to the experience, education, and training sections as well as any additional requirements. Your materials will only proceed in the process if your application and qualifying questionnaire clearly show that you meet the required minimum qualifications presented in the job posting.

The City of Springfield recognizes the extensive contributions of men and women who have served in the Armed Services. As a veteran, you may be entitled to preference when seeking employment with city government. We do require that you submit our Veteran Preference Form and a copy of your DD214/215 for each posting you apply to. Please contact Michelle Blomquist at 541-726-3786 or mblomquist@springfield-or.gov to learn more about Veterans Preference Points.

The Selection Process

After a job posting closes and applications are no longer accepted for the position, the initial phase of screening begins. Applications are screened based upon the relevant knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and training presented in the job posting and in the job specifications and addendums.

The selection process varies at this point according to the position. Additional screening can include scoring of supplemental questionnaires, structured interview, various written and aptitude tests, assessment center exercises, medical examinations, and psychological evaluations. Reference and Background Checks are used for all finalists.

Applicants selected to continue in the selection process will usually be notified up to three weeks after the posting deadline. Due to the volume of applications received by the City, generally, only applicants selected for further consideration (i.e. an interview) will be contacted. If you are not a finalist and have included your e-mail address on your online application, you will receive e-mail notification that your materials are no longer being considered.

Applications are reviewed and screened without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, marital or veteran status, medical condition or disabilities, or any other legally protected status.

The City of Springfield complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Any application with a qualified disability under the ADA may request accommodation by contacting the Human Resources Department at 541-726-3705.

In accordance with the Immigration and Reform Act of 1986, the City of Springfield will request all eligible candidates who accept employment with the City to prove they are eligible for employment in the United States.
