The City of Springfield through its cultural institutions, the Springfield Public Library and Springfield History Museum, with support from the Springfield Arts Commission, invite artists who live or work in the Springfield-Eugene area to develop proposals for luminaries.

Artists are encouraged to use both traditional and innovative materials. Up to six (6) artists will be selected to receive $250 each, to design, construct and submit luminaries as part of a storefront window exhibition in January 2021

The luminaries should explore, express or reflect the core exhibition concepts that include bringing light to the darkness, shedding light on the cultural and racial diversity in our community, and offering a light of hope for the New Year.

“Our intention is to cultivate diversity, equity, and access to the arts and culture of our region,” said Library Outreach Specialist Mindy Linder. “We envision a Springfield community where race, class, sexual orientation, gender, age, mental or physical ability do not pre-determine the success, safety, or health of our residents. All artists are strongly encouraged to apply.”

Artist proposals are due by 5 p.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2020 by email to mlinder@springfield-or.gov. Selected artists will be notified by Monday, December 14, 2020. Completed works will be due for submission no later than Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

For project inquiries, contact Mindy Linder, Library outreach specialist at the email above.

Illumination is part of a larger celebration of gratitude and hope through bringing light to the darkest months of the year. Seasons of Light (SoL) is a project of the Springfield Public Library and Springfield History Museum, with support from the Springfield Arts Commission. Featured projects will include DIY Luminary Kits, Winter Reading Program, as well as Give Light, a donation drive of basic supplies in partnership with Carry It Forward to support community members struggling with homelessness.
