Traffic Control Maintenance

Traffic control maintenance and construction activities provide control devises that are visible, informative, and effective in promoting traffic safety among all modes of transportation to comply with State and National Standards.  Traffic signals owned by the City and Oregons Department of Transportation are timed for safety and efficiency.

Construction and maintenance of traffic signs, traffic signals and pavement markings are the primary activities of the Maintenance Division's Traffic Control Maintenance and Construction program. Providing traffic control for the University of Oregon football games, festivals, parades, and other special events is another activity of this program. Along with maintaining the City's school warning beacons and 39 traffic signals, the City has contracted with the State of Oregon to perform maintenance on 25 State traffic signals within the City limits.

The City recently retrofitted 700 traffic signal heads and pedestrian heads with Light Emitting Diodes (LED). LED's are more energy efficient than the incandescent lamps previously used. The LED life span is approximately 10 years. The annual electric savings by making these changes is $17,000.
