The Building and Facilities Management program
oversees buildings, which are owned or operated by the City of Springfield, to
assure they are sanitary, safe, adequately maintained, and are operated
efficiently and effectively.
Buildings managed under this program include City
Hall, the Justice Center, Springfield Municipal Jail, five Fire Stations, Public
Works Maintenance Facilities, as well as leased facilities including an office
building at 5th and A, the Historic Railroad Depot, and Booth-Kelly Center. This
program has three essential areas of responsibility, Building Maintenance,
Custodial Services, and Security. |
Building Maintenance oversees the physical operation,
repair or replacement of building structures, systems, fixtures and equipment.
This includes performing skilled and semi-skilled labor to make adjustments and
repairs to mechanical, plumbing, and building facilities; coordinate work with
contractors for the repair, replacement and/or addition to the plumbing,
heating, security, fire, sprinkler, electrical, air conditioning, and alarm
systems. Staff also performs work on building exteriors to maintain building
integrity and weather-tightness. Grounds and landscape maintenance; such as
removing litter from sidewalks and parking lots around City Hall and maintains
City Hall flower beds are also Building Maintenance’s
responsibility.
Custodial Services cleans and sanitizes over 97,000
square feet of building space including City Hall, Museum and Wellness Center on
a daily basis. Custodians maintain a schedule for cleaning operations that
include contingency plans for special projects. They perform a full range of
regular custodial duties, including: sweeping, vacuuming and moping/shampooing
of floors; dusting counters; sanitizing restrooms; cleaning meeting rooms and
other public spaces; washing windows, and in general keeping the facilities
clean and sanitary for staff and patrons that use the facilities. Staff also
coordinates the setup and take-down of public meeting rooms in conjunction with
the Building Maintenance Workers.
Building Security staff secures City Hall, the
Museum, and surrounding grounds. Monitoring activities at City Hall, the Museum
and surrounding grounds is integral to our mission and helps prevent accidents,
property damage, and building equipment malfunctions. Security staff may assist
in the coordination of and scheduling the preparation, cleaning, setup and
take-down of public meeting rooms in conjunction with the Building Maintenance
Workers. Security locks, and otherwise secures, interior offices and perimeter
doors at City Hall and the Museum after custodial tasks are completed, and/or
the offices and buildings are closed to the
public.
All Building and Facilities Management Staff help to
monitor heating/cooling in our building’s staff and public areas, and assists in
administering City policies for the use of City facilities and their meeting
rooms, the Library, the Museum, and their surrounding grounds and parking lots.
